In a city where we get more precipitation then a Brazilian rainforest, waterproofing your basement is a more then a luxury, it’s a necessity.

Since I have lived in Rochester for most of my life, I never realized how much rain and snow we really got. I remember always hearing in the news that our annual precipitation was higher then any other city but it never seemed to be that big of a deal until I bought a house. My first home was in the city and like most starter homes it had a few more problems then anticipated. I bought the house in the summer and that was probably one of the worst times to buy since it is the only two months of the year that we are not flooded with rain, snow, sleet, and hail. To my surprise, once the blue sky turned to the familiar grey my basement started to develop a lovely puddle on the floor and an interesting smell to go along with it. My first reaction was that the water heater was going but after careful inspection, I realized it was the foundation. Yipeee! My first home owner expense that as a renter you do not have to pay for. Construction was never my strong suit so I immediately turned to the old reliable internet and searched for basement waterproofing rochester ny. There are so many different meditative practices, everyone can find a practice that works for them, and time to fit meditation into their schedules.

According to the Mayo Clinic, meditation is considered a type of mind/body complementary medicine that produces a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind. During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. This process results in enhanced physical and emotional well-being.

Meditation was originally practiced to help deepen one’s understanding of the sacred and mystical forces of life. These days, meditation is less of a mystical pursuit, and commonly used for relaxation and stress reduction.

The great thing about meditation is that it’s completely free and requires no special equipment. Here are some really easy and helpful meditation techniques to get started with:

· Guided meditation. Sometimes called guided imagery or visualization, with this method of meditation you form mental images of places or situations you find relaxing. You try to use as many senses as possible, such as smells, sights, sounds and textures. You may be led through this process by a guide or teacher.

· Mantra meditation. In this type of meditation, you silently repeat a calming word, thought or phrase to prevent distracting thoughts. Transcendental meditation is a type of mantra meditation in which you achieve a deep state of relaxation to achieve pure awareness.

· Mindfulness meditation. This type of meditation is based on being mindful, or having an increased awareness and acceptance of living in the present moment. You focus on what you experience during meditation, such as the flow of your breath. You can observe your thoughts and emotions but let them pass without judgment.

By practicing these three techniques in your everyday life, you can expect to see huge emotional benefits, such as:

· Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations

· Building skills to manage your stress

· Increased self-awareness

· Focusing on the present

· Reducing negative emotions

When I think of the word “wellness” the image of a young person practicing yoga on a beach pops in my mind. But is that what wellness really is? Carolina Partners has recently recruited expressive art therapist Allison Grubbs, MSW, LCSW, LCAS to our Wellness Center in Raleigh. Allison will be offering a combination of traditional mental health counseling, mindfulness/meditation and expressive art therapy. Some of our mental health community is not familiar with art therapy, so we’d like to take this opportunity to explain what it is and how it works.

According to the International Art Therapy Organization, art therapy is “a form of expressive therapy that uses art materials, such as paints, chalk and markers. Art therapy combines traditional psychotherapeutic theories and techniques with an understanding of the psychological aspects of the creative process, especially the affective properties of the different art materials.” The National Institute of Health describes art therapy as a “mental health profession that uses the creative process of art-making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages”. Art therapy is employed in many clinical settings with diverse populations. It can be found in non-clinical settings as well, such as in art studios and in workshops that focus on creativity development. Art therapists work with children, adolescents, and adults and provide services to individuals, couples, families, groups, and communities.

Allison Grubbs provides expressive art therapy for all ages and is willing to work with individuals and groups alike. Art therapists like Allison are masters level counseling professionals who hold a degree in art or a related field. Educational requirements include: theories of art therapy, counseling, and psychotherapy; ethics and standards of practice; assessment and evaluation; individual, group, and family techniques; human and creative development; multicultural issues; research methods; and practicum experiences in clinical, community, and/or other settings. Art therapists are skilled in the application of a variety of art modalities (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other media) for assessment and treatment.

Today with the wind forecast at 15 out of the east and the big full moon tides we decided to go look for big downtown Islamorada bonefish. These fish are very educated by years of keys guides fishing for them but the reward of catching a 12+ pound bonefish is worth it. More world records for bonefish have been caught here than anywhere else in the world. We started the day with a rising tide so looking for mudding fish was the game. The first spot produced no shots but a quick move to another flat showed signs of life, rays and sharks. Within minutes I spotted a school of mudding fish. After about 4 really good shots and no bites the tide was high and getting ready to change. So we needed to move to the Oceanside flats for some more action. With the tide just beginning to fall we poled the edge of a flat where the water was pretty dusty, great conditions for feeding one of these giants. I saw some flashes about 200 feet ahead so as we approached several Bonefish were tailing in 2.5 feet of water! With the fish in casting distance my angler made a great cast leading the fish by 10 feet up current. The fish moved closer and I said bump the fly one of the fish ran over and pinned the fly to the bottom. Fish On! As the bonefish ran off the flat disaster struck. He cut us off on a sea fan. So we tie another fly on and get back to the hunt. As we poled down the edge of the same flat we had another 4 shots but no takers. With tide getting real low we made one more move but there was no life on that spot. So we headed back to the dock with nothing for the day. Any day soon we knew it would happen… we would catch that giant bonefish.

How to get your lawn off to great start this spring

After this winters long winter, your lawn has been dormant under a blanket of snow and will benfit from some extra care and maintenance this spring. Start with a thorough raking and or sweeping . This will remove any leaves from last fall nad remove some of the dead grass blades. It will also improve air flow In the lawn and help reduce the severity of snow mold. Finaly it will allow light and warmth to pentrate the lawn, stimulating and encourageing new growth.

If the lawn is thin it may benefit from over seeding.

Repair any of the lawn areas that were damaged by plowing and deicing activities this winter. Rake up the loose sod and topdress the areas with topsoil and seed. Be sure to keep the areas slightly damp for a period of 3 weeks following seeding.

Apply a balanced lawn fertilizer which should expedite growth, green up and your lawns density creating a natural barrier to weeds. Resist putting crabrass controls on your lawn too early. The soils in areas like Webster, Penfield, or Irondequoit don’t waarm as quickly as those in Pittsford, Brighton or Fairport. Crabgrass generaly does not germinate untill late May or early June in our region of the county. Fertilize your lawn again in May and apply broadleaf weed controls if needed.

Finaly don’t forget to water your lawn if we get a spring dry spell. By following these simple steps your lawn will be off to a great start for the season.

From Shoebox to the Movies: Bringing Life to Family Photos

We recently helped one of our clients do something special for his mother’s 80th birthday celebration. Knowing that many long-time friends, as well as children, grandchildren and other relatives would be there for the occasion he wanted to create a “this is your life” documentary using pictures that everyone would recall or relate to.

“Quick, go online and pull down all of her iPhone snapshots from SnapFish (or even her FaceBook account)”, the kids might initially suggest. “Oh wait, her life began in 1930, long before most families took color photos, let alone capturing those fleeting moments in digital form” would be the caution from any of us folks over forty. Our client’s only hope: to pray that he could sift through his mother’s archive of old family pictures and photo albums to find enough good images to tell the story.

Fortunately that was the case. In short order, he was able to select important photos from the past, beginning with when HER parents were courting, proceeding through her own childhood years with her brother, continuing on through her marriage, pregnancies and enjoying motherhood with her husband and their own two sons. He carefully organized the different time periods into well-marked plastic bags and brought them to pixelPRESERVE.

That’s when we sprung into action, since by that point we had just over a week to digitally scan all his photos and put them onto a DVD for showing on a large screen HDTV at the birthday party. Oh, I forgot an important part of the DVD requirement: the photos were to be shown in the form of a musical video, fading in and out to the song “Times of Your Life”, by Paul Anka. And another thing, this client was in Florida during the entire week, far away from pixelPRESERVE’s business in Rochester, NY, while we collaborated via email and YouTube “roughs” to get it just right. But we made the deadline, Mom was happy and her son was a hero!

After getting the new TV home the first thing you want to do is replace the old one and start watching programs in Hi Definition (HD). So you find the cable hookup jack and screw it on, and go to your favorite shows. But it doesn't look like it's in HD, and your right if you go to the same old channels your used to (1-99), there still analog Low Definition. What you need to do is go to the "TV menu" and find "Auto Channel Scan" to find the hidden HD Digital channels. This step takes some time but when it's done you will find new channels if you go up and down, thru the channel selection.

The new HD channels may be 8.1, 10-1, or random channel numbers above or between analog channels depending on type of TV brand or "channel tuner chip" in your TV.
